Tamiya 1/32 D.H. Mosquito FB. Mk VI

Some interesting activity in the 1/32 scale modelling world over the last couple of years. First, Hong Kong Models (rapidly gaining a reputation as the home of the spectacular model kit) throw out a 1/32 Mossie....(more...)

2nd October 2016

Trumpeter 1/32 AV-8B Harrier II Plus

As I have said many times before, you've got to hand it to Trumpeter for supplying us keen modellers with plenty of large scale jets. And they are always well moulded and generally well fitting, with plenty....(more...)

16th August 2016

 Italeri 1/72 S.79 "Sparviero"

An interesting commission was presented to me with regards to this aircraft. What the customer actually wanted was the third iteration of the S.79 civilian prototype, S.79 P.III "I-MAGO" ("wizard")....(more...)

9th May 2016

 HPH 1/32 PBY-5A Catalina (Cutaway)

There seems to be a real movement in the world of mainstream kit production these days to produce the "ultimate" model kit. HK Models and HPH Models are two of the main protagonists seemingly wanting to outdo each other....(more...)

20th March 2016

 Eduard 1/48 Hawker Tempest V

One is not exactly spoilt for choice in 1/48 for a Tempest V. This particular kit I have been presented with is pretty much the only option and is one of the early "Profipack" releases from Eduard....(more...)

28th February 2016

 Airfix 1/72 Vickers Valiant

One of the new breed of Airfix toolings produced since the Hornby take over, this kit provided a much sought after filling for a hole in the cold war back catalogue of kits....(more...)

14th January 2016

 Antares 1/48 Bf109TL

Here I am delving into the world of specialist resin kits once again in order to reproduce a very obscure subject. No, it is NOT an Me 262, although it looks very like one, but it was a backup project to the 262....(more...)

27th November 2015

 Fonderie Miniature 1/48 Breguet 693

Fonderie Miniature do not have the greatest reputation for producing buildable kits. Unfortunately I have to report that it is not improved with this one. This is possibly one of the toughest....(more...)

15th November 2015

 Roden 1/72 Fairchild C-123B Provider

Something a little outside of the middle of the road from Roden, purveyors of surprisingly good kits. If you are not familiar with this aircraft, you've probably seen it many times in the movies....(more...)

11th September 2015

 Trumpeter 1/48 Douglas C-47 Skytrain

I've finally got around to building one of my all time favourite aircraft, and this excellent offering from Trumpeter in 1/48 builds into an impressive and imposing model. As a kit, it is beautifully moulded......(more...)

9th June 2015

 Fly Models 1/32 Arado AR-234 B-2

Fly Models have started producing some interesting kits, and this is one of them. As far as I know, this is the only game in town for an AR-234 in 1/32 and its a pretty good effort.....(more...)

14th May 2015

 GWH 1/48 Focke Wulf FW189

The GWH series of "UHU"s has been around for a few small years now and has generally been very well received. The kit is of very high quality, with some fine details and excellent fit....(more...)

14th April 2015

Hong Kong Models 1/32 B-25J Mitchell

One of HK Models first releases, this one, but none the worse for it. The kit is simply sublime and falls together perfectly, even when the modeller has played around with it....(more...)

2nd February 2015

 Kitty Hawk 1/48 MiG-25 "Foxbat"

The MiG-25, to those of us of a certain age, brings back many thrilling memories from the 1970s. The name "Foxbat" in itself conjured up an image of something incredibly secret....(more...)

1st December 2014

 Tamiya 1/32 F-15E Strike Eagle

A superb kit, this one, building into a seriously imposing model. This is a commission built for a customer who used to fly these things....(more...)

2nd November 2014

 Doyusha 1/100 Lockheed L1011 Tristar

A minor departure for me, my subjects are usually more military in focus. However, this customer is looking for a specific Gulf Air aircraft that has a personal connection, and I love doing that kind of commission....(more...)

2nd September 2014

 Alley Cat/Airfix 1/48 Gloster Javelin Mk7

Yes, I know I built the new Airfix 1/48 Javelin recently, but this one is special. The customer wanted it converted to Mk 7 XH754 using the Alley Cat resin conversion set, which involves some modifications....(more...)

10th August 2014

 Revell 1/32 Supermarine Spitfire MkIIa

The latest addition to Revell's brilliant 1/32 series, this brand new tool Spit, whilst not quite attaining the refinement of Tamiya's 1/32 series, comes in at around a fifth of the price, so who's complaining....(more...)

23rd July 2014

 Monogram 1/48 Consolidated B-24 Liberator

This is an old kit, but still holds its own. Especially if you want a 1/48 scale Libby, as there is no other choice! But it's basically accurate and contains some nice details but is probably best dressed up....(more...)

29th June 2014

Pacific Coast Models 1/32 Hawker Hurricane Mk1

This kit has it's challenges, but with a little care it builds into a beautiful and faithful representation of this most famous aircraft. I chose the markings of Douglas Bader, basically because of his reputation....(more...)

12th May 2014

 Revell 1/32 Hawker Hunter FGA.9

This venerable kit was originally released back in the '90s, long before Revell's recent (and highly popular) assault on the 1/32 scale market. In common with the 1/32 Tornado which came along about the same time....(more...)

30th April 2014

 Matchbox 1/32 Westland Lysander III

This is a very old kit, originally produced in the 70s, however it actually stands up pretty well even against modern toolings. The aircraft itself was pretty basic as well, and this kit, with a little care, certainly builds into a fine and imposing model....(more...)

1st April 2014

Airfix 1/72 Avro Lancaster B.III "Dambuster"

This is a bit of self indulgence, the Lanc is my favourite aircraft of all time and this is a brand new tool from Airfix depicting the "Boy's Own" favourite, the Special Type 464 , a.k.a "Dambuster".....(more...)

9th March 2014

Hong Kong Models 1/32 B-17G Flying Fortress

OK, finally here it is. Quite simply the most awesome plastic kit money can buy (until the 1/32 Lancaster comes out this year, I suspect). It is not without problems (and it is very expensive), but....(more...)

9th March 2014

 Eduard 1/48 Lockheed P-38J Lightning

Not an Eduard original, this one, the plastic is "borrowed" from Academy, and the box is filled with extra Eduard goodies. But the old Academy kit stands up well, still arguably the best 1/48 P-38 out there....(more...)

19th November 2013

 Roden 1/48 Pilatus Porter PC6

Every now and then it's nice to stray away from the mainstream aircraft, and build something that is not bristling with guns and bombs. So when a good customer of mine came to me with a request to build one of these I was rather intrigued....(more...)

29th October 2013

Airfix 1/48 Gloster Javelin FAW 9

What on earth have Airfix started eating for breakfast? Not so long ago they were the laughing stock of the model kit industry, selling kits based on ancient moulds that were being bought....(more...)

7th October 2013

Planet Models 1/32 Blohm und Voss BV40V-1

Blohm und Voss have long been associated with some of the more esoteric aircraft designs. Their asymmetrical BV 141 surely qualifies as one of the most outrageous vehicles that ever took to the air....(more...)

14th September 2013

 Anigrand 1/144 Avro Vulcan

Hong Kong based kit manufacturers Anigrand produce a pretty neat range of resin kits. The quality is always good (for resin kits!) and they cover some really interesting subjects....(more...)

25th August 2013

 Eduard 1/48 Messerschmitt Bf109E-7

There is not exactly a shortage of Bf109 kits out there in the wild. With the possible exception of the Spitfire it is probably the most kitted aircraft there is. And most of them are actually pretty good....(more...)

2nd July 2013

 Italeri 1/48 Bell UH-1N

It's not uncommon for me to be presented with a photo from a customer accompanied by a request to "build one of those". There then follows some serious research to see what is available in terms....(more...)

14th April 2013

Grey Matter Figures Henschel Hs129 B-2

Originally moulded by Jerry Rutman and recently re-released under the "Grey Matter Figures" brand, this is the only available option for the Hs129 in 1/32. It's resin, with all the attendant vices....(more...)

13th March 2013

 Revell 1/32 Heinkel He111 P-1

Well, here is a kit that I would defy most modellers to turn down if offered the chance to build it. It's only been out a short while and followed hot on the heels of the 1/32 Ju88....(more...)

16th January 2013

 Eduard 1/48 Bf108B "Taifun"

I've been wanting to produce one of these for a long time, and at last Eduard have provided a decent kit in my favourite scale. This aircraft has fascinated me for a long time...(more...)

3rd January 2013

 Valom 1/48 Antonov AN-2T

This is my first Valom kit - they are an intriguing Czech outfit that is basically one guy who creates kits of good quality and with a lot of love and attention...(more...)

4th December 2012

 Classic Airframes 1/48 Avro Anson

In this world of modelling the sleek and sexy lines of Spitfires and Phantoms, it is very rewarding every now and then to get to grips with something a little more traditional...(more...)

18th November 2012

 AeroClub 1/144 DeHavilland Mosquito

If you want to build a Mosquito in 1/144 scale, this is currently your only option. And it's hard to track down, having been out of production for some years. But they do crop up on the second hand market from time to time...(more...)

12th November 2012

 Ocidental 1/48 Fiat G91 R-3

One of my regular customers had a hankering for a "Gina" in 1/48. Options are limited, it's either this or the Heller version which is the same plastic. The Italeri version is not worth bothering with so I have tracked down one of these...(more...)

23rd October 2012

 Wingnut Wings 1/32 Pfalz D.IIIa

I've only re-discovered First World War aviation relatively recently. For many years, I avoided biplanes like the plague - too many memories of problems fitting the wings and the mind numbing process of rigging. But there are some attractions...(more...)

3rd October 2012

 Sweet 1/144 Desert Hurricane

Ignore the "interesting" box artwork. This is actually an excellent rendition of the classic WWII fighter in the diminutive scale. This is a commission build for a good customer of mine who wants it turned into a MK.IID "Can Opener"...(more...)

30th September 2012

 Trumpeter 1/48 Sukhoi SU-24 "Fencer" D

This is a new commission from someone who loves these planes. This one is going to be "in flight", i.e. landing gear up and pilot figures added. Also going for the secondary paint scheme in the kit, a beautiful two tone brown camouflage...(more...)

17th September 2012

 Matchbox 1/32 DH-82 Tiger Moth

Well here's an old friend! This kit came out more years ago than I can remember (and that is a lot of years, believe me). It's been reboxed by Revell and others since but this is the original, complete with two multi colour sprues... (more...)

10th September 2012

 Italeri 1/48 Focke Wulf FW190D-9

If you want to build an "Dora" in 1/48 - most people would point you straight to Eduard who have something of an obsession with this plane and have produced endless variations. But there are some good alternatives out there, notably Tamiya... (more...)

28th August 2012

 Italeri 1/48 Panavia Tornado IDS

I love the Tornado, and if you want to build one in 1/48 this is probably the best choice of kit. The Airfix offering is showing some age and the HobbyBoss one, although a great piece of engineering, is just too inaccurate to be fixed easily... (more...)

14th August 2012

 Sweet 1/144 P-51B Pioneer Mustang

1/144 is not my default scale, like most modellers I have done my fair share of it in the past, usually larger aircraft such as airliners and big transports. But I was asked for a 1/144 RAF Mustang by a customer who collects in the scale... (more...)

8th August 2012

 Dragon 1/48 Ju88 A-4

Although a few years old now, this is the best 1/48 Ju88 kit on the market. So when I was asked to build one on a commission I went straight to it. The kit is very well detailed, although with a little flash in places but nothing that cannot be dealt with... (more...)

22nd July 2012

 Eduard 1/48 Bf110C

I haven't make a Bf110 for a while, and so was very pleased to land this one as a commission build. I love making the Eduard ProfiPak kits, they have everything you need in the box, right down to the canopy masks... (more...)

12th July 2012

 Hasegawa 1/48 RF-4B Phantom II

I just love the Phantom II. Of all the military jets produced this one just looks like it means business. Decent kits of it in 1/48 are few and far between, Hasegawa is really the only choice for the discerning modeller... (more...)

5th July 2012

 Italeri 1/48 Junkers Ju87B Stuka

Italeri are a hit and miss manufacturer in my experience, often reboxing less succesful older mouldings from other companies. But when they make their own they are generally pretty good and all the promising signs are there with this one.... (more...)

28th June 2012

 Airfix 1/48 E.E. Lightning F.6

This is undoubtedly one of the very best kits that Airfix have ever produced, and belies their rather low end image these days, even though the kit was designed over 15 years ago.... (more...)

18th June 2012

 Italeri 1/48 Hawker Hunter F. Mk6/9

This is a rebox of the Academy kit, but with a stunning new sheet of decals. On inspection, the flaws of the original have remained, unfortunately, predominantly the ridiculously undersized cockpit.... (more...)

20th May 2012

 Hobby Boss 1/48 F3H-2M Demon

This one is being built as a commission. Have heard great things about it, and it's a subject that has been sorely overlooked by most kit manufacturers in the past.... (more...)

10th May 2012

 AFV Club 1/48 F-5F "Sundowners"

I bought this kit on a whim, have always loved the Tiger II and it is one of those rare planes whose looks are not spoilt, in fact are arguably enhanced, by the two seater version.... (more...)

1st May 2012

 Airfix 1/48 Buccaneer S2

One of the most infamous, yet sought after kits around, this. It is the only option for the Buccaneer in 1/48 and this kit is one of the most uncooperative you can buy. Poor fit, warped parts, out of register decals... (more...)

17th April 2012

 Tamiya 1/48 Mosquito FBVI

I absolutely love the Mosquito. It was one of the first kits I ever built as a kid (the old Airfix 1/72 mould) and undoubtedly not far off the Spitfire when it comes to recognisability by the man in the street.... (more...)

12th April 2012

 Hasegawa 1/48 F104G Starfighter

The Starfighter has always been an extremely popular modelling subject. What with it's sleek, rocket-like, almost physics defying design that could have come straight out of any of the Gerry Anderson series... (more...)

10th April 2012

 MPM 1/48 He 177A-5 "Grief"

This is one of those kits that many of us modellers either have in our stash or on our watch lists, and is firmly in the "get around to it one day" camp although most of us fail to do so... (more...)

29th March 2012

 Academy 1/72 Spitfire Mk XIVc

I love doing these "little" kits. As long as they are decent quality, of course. If your experience of 1/72 scale Spitfires goes no further than the old Airfix toolings from the 70s then think again, there... (more...)

22nd March 2012

 Tamiya 1/48 A-1J Skyraider

Cluttering up the workbench recently has been Tamiya's masterful 1/48 rendition of what is arguably the ugliest (yet somehow rather appealing) and testosterone fuelled plane to have been designed since the Stuka... (more...)
